1998 CHAMPAGNE SERIES
Three Sundays of Racing
For One-Design and PHRF Fleets
January 11th January 18th February 1st
South Bay Yacht Racing Club is pleased to announce the 1998 Champagne Series, open to all members of PHRF and One Design fleets. Traditionally one of the most challenging "Round the Buoys" Series as it is sailed in varying winter conditions, this event is scheduled to include five races to be sailed on three Sundays. The CHAMPAGNE PERPETUAL TROPHY will be awarded to the Series overall winner. The KLEVE PERPETUAL TROPHY, established to honor the years of service given to SBYRC by Gregory and Mary Jeane Kleve, will be given to the boat with the best Series record from the Cal 20 and Santana 20 participants. Overall Series trophies will be awarded for each established class on the last race day. Bottles of champagne will be awarded as class trophies for each race at the end of each race day.
All participants are invited to enjoy South Bay’s hospitality following the races at Marina Venice Yacht Club on January 11th and January 18th, and at Windjammers’ Yacht Club on February 1st.

NOTICE OF RACE
1998 Champagne Series
For PHRF & One Design Classes to be held
January 11th, January 18th, & February 1st
at Marina del Rey
RULES: This series will be governed by The Racing Rules of Sailing for 1997-2000, the prescriptions of US Sailing, the PHRF and/or One Design class rules, the Notice of Race, except as any of these are altered by the Sailing Instructions, the Sailing Instructions and any amendments and notices issued by the Race Committee. Sailing instructions will be available no later than January 4, 1998 at (a) the South Bay Yacht Racing Club ("SBYRC") drop box located to the left of the main entrance of the California Sailing Academy ("CSA"), 14025 Panay Way, MdR (2nd floor, east end), and (b) SBYRC’s web site at www.beachnet.com/~sbyrc.
ENTRIES: Each entrant must be a member of a yacht club or sailing association belonging to SCYA & US Sailing, racing a boat which is registered in the class or fleet in which it competes. To enter, complete the attached entry form and submit it with the appropriate entry fee as outlined therein, either by mail to SBYRC, Post Office Box 10967, MdR, CA 90295, or by hand to the SBYRC drop box at CSA. Make checks payable to SBYRC. For Champagne Series participants, entry forms must arrive no later than 1900 hours, Saturday, January 10th. Single day participants must submit their entry form no later than 1900 hours on the day before that race. Late entries may not be accepted unless arrangements have been made with the race chair.
NOTICES: Classes, class flags, order of starts, class starting times, any amendments to the Sailing Instructions and Notices to Competitors will be posted by 0900 hours each race day at SBYRC’s Notice Board at CSA.
CLASSES: Classes will be established for PHRF and One-Design fleets with a minimum of four entries, based on entries received by 1900 hours on Saturday, January 10th. The entry form for a One Design boat should include it’s Area B PHRF buoy rating in the event that a One Design class is not established.
SCHEDULE OF RACES: Five races are scheduled of which two must be completed to constitute a series. The Race Committee will attempt to conduct two races on January 11th, two races on January 18th and one race on February 1st. If a makeup race is needed, there will be two races scheduled on February 1st. The warning signal for the first start of each day will be at 1150 hours. Subsequent races on each day will start as soon as possible after the finish of the preceding race. Order of starts may be changed after the first race of each day.
COURSES: The races will be selected from ASMBYC Course Chart 15 including Chart Instructions, conducted on the Olympic Circle off the MdR breakwater.
SCORING: The Low Point Scoring System, Rule A2, with no throwouts, will apply. For Champagne Series scoring: (a) race results will be rescored with only Series entries included and (b) Rule A5 will be substituted for the second paragraph of Rule A2.2, with "the number of boats entered in the series" defined as the total number of entrants in each class which paid the Champagne Series entry fee or which entered all three days on a single day basis. For a class to be eligible for the Champagne Perpetual Trophy, at least two boats from that class must compete in each race.
PRIZES: Individual trophies will be awarded in each class for each race and will be presented as soon as possible after each day’s racing at Marina Venice Yacht Club on January 11th and January 18th , and at Windjammers’ Yacht Club on February 1st.
The number of trophies awarded will be determined by the number of boats in each class:
|

|

10+ entries - 4 trophies |
The KLEVE PERPETUAL TROPHY will be awarded to the boat with the best series record from the Cal 20 and Santana 20 class participants.
