News for February 1997

1997 CHAMPAGNE SERIES
January 12th   January 19th   February 9th

We have been having a terrific turn out for our 1997 Champagne Series.

Day 1, January 12th, started out very rainy. Committee members and races wondered if the races would be canceled. But, rain alone would not stop our PRO and Commodore Tom O'Conor.

One by one the racers came out. All in all about 11 skippers and crew from PHRF A, B, and C, One Schock 35, and 2 J-24's braved the wet. The rain did stop and with light air, we successfully completed race #1.

Everyone  was very happy to get back to MVYC  to receive daily trophys and to enjoy tacos and hors d'oeuvers prepared by our Hospitality Chair, Laura Lewis.

Special thanks to the very wet and cold Race Committee, who still managed to run a race and have fun:

Commodore Tom O'Conor, Treasurer Marylyn Hoenemeyer, Judge Advocate Steve Glassman, Staff Commodore Dennis Dyer, veteran race committee member Sylvia Freedman and her friend Kate, Vice Commodore Kim Moore, and her cousin, Norma Reynolds.

Day 2, was much drier and warmer.  45 racers came out!  This day was run jointly with WYC Winter Series day 2.

Tom O'Conor, Marylyn Hoenemeyer, Sylvia Freedman, and Kim Moore came out again on race committee and were joined by Secretary Lisa Hackenberg.  Gerhard Klose represented WYC on the committee.

With light and variable winds, we completed race #2.  The wind picked up for race #3 but died before the cut-off time of 4:30.

Race #3 was abandoned for all but the Schocks.

The last day of the series is February 9th.  Weather permitting, we will run 1 race for the Schocks and 2 races for all other fleets.  Don't forget, you can enter for the day even if you are not entered for the series.
