Chartered in 1964, South Bay Yacht Racing Club has served the Southern California yachting community for more than thirty years. Originally founded in King Harbor, SBYRC was created to fill the role of parent club for temporary residents who wished to race their sailboats but were unwilling to wait for membership in a traditional "landed" yacht club.

Most racing organizers require membership in a United States Sailing Association (USSA) member club in order to participate in their races. The Southern California Yachting Association (SCYA), and the Association of Santa Monica Bay Yacht Clubs are two other associations in which most local yacht clubs maintain membership. The South Bay Yacht Racing Club is a member of all of these organizations, as well as the California Marine Parks and Harbor association, The National Federation of Boating and Recreational Boaters of California (two lobbying associations). These organizations are important to those of us who enjoy yacht racing in these waters, and they would not exist without our support. Insuring support of these organizations is one of the reasons that yacht club membership is a requirement for most racing.

The South Bay Yacht Racing Club supports yacht racing in many other ways. Many racers do not think about the expense of maintaining the racing buoys, the costs of race management, the efforts required to make and publish race rules, the volunteer time spent processing appeals, organizing and publicizing races, sustaining perpetual trophies and educational and charitable activities to the local yacht racing community.

SBYRC offers two distinct capabilities that are not generally available at other yacht clubs. Because its original purpose was to get participants into racing with as few obstacles as possible, SBYRC continues to process membership applications within one month of their receipt, and offers even faster "special handling" with the payment of an additional $25.00 processing fee. The maintenance of minimal overhead insures that the vast majority of membership fees are returned directly to the racing community. South Bay Yacht Racing Club is one of the very few clubs that is run by active racers and exists solely to support yacht racing.

Current information on the Club may be obtained on our Web Page; the Internet address is: http://www.beachnet.com/~sbyrc. The Board of Directors meets each month (except December, July and August).
